Sonar and Hydroacoustics

Metla Environmental offers a range of sonar and hydroacoustic services.  Our equipment inventory includes a Biosonics® DTX echo sounder and Sound Metrics® ARIS 1800 multiple beam sonar.

• The Biosonics echo sounder is a split beam sonar suited for bathymetry, fisheries assessment (fish biomass, abundance and distribution) and under water vegetation mapping.  Metla has experience using hydro acoustics for limnology and fisheries assessment, including adult and juvenile salmonids.
• The level of resolution afforded by the  multiple beam sonar ARIS (www.soundmetrics.com) makes it ideal for a range of applications in industry, law enforcement/military, environmental assessment and fisheries management.   Powerful multifunction software enables the ARIS sonar to produce near-video-quality images. The ARIS 1800 is well suited for fisheries purposes because of its ability to deliver necessary detail in a real-time format.  The software also allows for imagery to be stored on time/date stamped files for later examination. Metla has 10 years of experience using multiple beam sonar (DIDSON and ARIS) for salmon stock assessment in northern Canada.  We were the first company in Canada to offer services using multiple beam sonar for salmon stock assessment.
• Sonar rental and training – Metla offers competitive rental rates on the ARIS 1800 sonar.  We also supply peripheral hardware such as computers, wireless data transfer equipment and specialized sonar lenses.   We provide technical training on the use and application of the sonar, data collection and data interpretation.  This includes, in addition to standard sonar operation, the use of Arisfish© and Echotastic software.
